Nestled in the heart of Los Cabos, a treasure trove of benefits awaits those who call this paradise home. Beyond the perpetual sunshine and pristine beaches lies a tapestry of delights, including a culinary scene that tantalizes the taste buds, vibrant cultural festivities, and a plethora of outdoor escapades. Amidst these riches, a hidden gem often overlooked by locals and seasonal residents is the seamless access to world-class beachfront hotels and resorts, elevating the Cabo San Lucas experience to new heights. And the key to unlocking this luxury isn’t reserved solely for tourists – all it takes is a day pass!

In Los Cabos, these day passes open the doors to a realm of relaxation, offering indulgence in swimming pools, hot tubs, and sun-kissed beaches. Culinary delights and refreshing drinks await, and for those seeking the epitome of rejuvenation, some day passes even include spa services. Essentially, it’s the resort experience without the commitment of overnight stays and exorbitant price tags. Although the landscape of day passes has shifted in the wake of pandemic-induced health guidelines, there remain excellent options for locals and seasonal residents yearning for a daycation.

While the allure of popular settings like Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas commands attention, the rates reflect the high demand. However, veer away from the well-trodden paths of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and discover hidden gems that offer picturesque pleasures at surprisingly affordable rates. Embrace the luxury of Los Cabos, not just as a destination but as a daily escape, with Cabo San Lucas day passes unlocking a world of leisure and indulgence for those in the know.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of our favorite Cabo day pass options in 2024.

Photo credit: Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa

Cabo San Lucas – Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa

Corazón Cabo’s grand opening in May came on the heels of a $100 million dollar rebuild and rebrand of the old Cabo Villas. The new property offers plenty of great features, from balcony hot tubs in many rooms to the highest rooftop bar in Cabo San Lucas, the spectacular Rooftop 360. The resort’s best feature, of course, is its central location on the city’s largest and most popular beach, Playa El Médano.

The former Cachet Beach Club is now Corazon branded, with everything from lounges and cabanas to fresh seafood and cocktail service. Corazón actually offers several day pass options through resortpass.com, including a beach pass that includes a reserved lounge chair and umbrella.

VIP packages include the “Heart of Cabo”, which boasts a beachfront cabana and 30-minute massage, plus assorted F&B credits at resort-based restaurants (including the beachfront Aleta) and watering holes.

Pelicanos 225, El Médano Ejidal, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 980-0604, Corazon Cabo. Day pass price: From $100 USD for adults. Purchase here Corazon Day Pass.

Photo credit: Hotel Tesoro Los Cabos

Cabo San Lucas – Hotel Tesoro Los Cabos

This property has a long and tangled history in Cabo San Lucas. There are still a few grizzled expats who refer to it as Plaza No Glorias after one of its previous incarnations (and there have been a few, from Costa Real and Plaza Las Glorias to a brief period of Wyndham branding after it became El Tesoro).

That said, the central marina-front location is hard to beat, and the views of the marina and bay beyond from the rooftop Skypool are objectively gorgeous. The swim-up bar and hot tubs here are pretty sweet, too.

Day passes have gone up in price in recent years, but still remain an incredible value. They’re now available in either 4- or 7-hour versions, and include access to the pool and hot tubs, plus cabanas, lounge chairs and towels, as well as free Wi-Fi and basically all the food and drinks you can handle (unlimited national drinks and breakfast buffet for the 4-hour version; all that plus lunch for the 7-hour ticket).

It’s definitely a top Cabo day pass option. Children under 12 aren’t eligible, however, and guests will need to check in at reception and leave an ID card as a guarantee against damages.

Blvd. Paseo de la Marina, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 173-9300, Tesoro Los Cabos.

Photo credit: Barceló Gran Faro Los Cabos

San José del Cabo – Barceló Gran Faro Los Cabos

The name doesn’t lie. Gran Faro means great lighthouse, and this all-inclusive San José del Cabo resort certainly has one, along with a sushi bar at its top that offers spectacular wraparound views of the city and Sea of Cortés. The property’s most notable asset, however, is the beach. Barcelo is set along the Zona Hotelera – the city’s prime hotel zone – which is framed by a wide stretch of glorious golden sand.

The day pass offers access to the beach and outdoor swimming pools (there are three), with sun lounges and towels included. Yes, unlimited food and drinks are included as well, but the resort recommends checking in at reception to find out which restaurants or bars are included in the package for that day. The Kids Club is also open to day pass purchasers, and since tickets are half-price for kids, this is a great family-friendly option.

Paseo Malecón San José 9, Zona Hotelera, San José del Cabo, (624) 142-9292, Barcelo Gran Faro Los Cabos.

Photo Credit: Cerritos Surf Town Beach Hotel & Spa

Cerritos – Cerritos Surf Town Beach Hotel & Spa

If you love surfing in Los Cabos, then you know the best wintertime breaks are off Pacific side beaches like Los Cerritos, San Pedrito and La Pastora. The first, commonly known as Cerritos, is a long-time favorite of locals; not just for the surfing, but as a tranquilo weekend getaway from Cabo San Lucas. The surfing is excellent here, however, and it’s the inspiration for Cerritos Surf Town Hotel & Spa – the best day pass destination on the beach.

Like many “Cabo day pass” options, this one comes with a food and drink credit ($20), plus access to the swimming pool and hot tub. Shaded tables overlook the beach, and extras like surf lessons and board rentals are available for those who don’t mind leaving the comfort of the pool for more active pastimes in a far larger pool (AKA, the Pacific Ocean). Bring your dog if you like. This is one of the best dog-friendly beaches in the area, and the resort welcomes four-legged guests.

The sunsets are amazing here, so don’t leave too early.

Hwy. 19 Km. 67, Playa Los Cerritos, El Pescadero, (624) 160-0881, Cerritos Surf Town.

Photo credit: Hotel Buena Vista Oceanfront & Hot Springs Resort

East Cape – Hotel Buena Vista Oceanfront & Hot Springs Resort

Those who’ve spent time on Los Cabos’ East Cape may already be familiar with this benchmark family-owned property, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. Certainly those who follow the local fishing scene will know the name, since the resort plays host to Bisbee’s annual East Cape Offshore each August.

But if you don’t know it, here’s why you should get acquainted. Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort is built on underground thermal hot springs, which fuels the excellent “must try” onsite hot tub. This beautifully landscaped resort has much more to offer day pass visitors, however, from the secluded beach and large pool area to picturesque seating at El Navegante – the onsite restaurant – where menu items are likely as not made from family recipes handed down for generations.

A $20 credit on food and drink is included with the day pass price, and kids will appreciate the gazebo-set pool (billiards) and ping pong tables. Speaking of kids, everything is half price for those ages 11 and younger ($15 for the day pass/$10 food and drink credit).

105 Hwy. 1, Spa Buenavista, Buenavista, East Cape, (624) 142-0099, Hotel Buena Vista Resort.

The benefits of living in Los Cabos are legion. There’s the year-round sunshine and beautiful beaches, of course, not to mention the amazing cuisine, festive cultural celebrations, and unending variety of incredible outdoor adventures. But there’s also another benefit that far too few locals and seasonal residents take advantage of – convenient access to first-class (in some cases, world-class) beachfront hotels and resorts. Fact is, you don’t have to be a tourist to enjoy the region’s stunning collection of hotels and resorts. All you need is a Cabo day pass!

Day passes in Los Cabos typically offer access to swimming pools, hot tubs, and beaches, as well as food and drinks, and in some cases even spa services. Basically, it’s the resort experience without the overnight stays and hefty price tags. Of course, after two years of pandemic inspired health guidelines at local resorts, day passes are not quite as ubiquitious as they once were. But locals and seasonal residents seeking a vacation for a day still have some excellent options to choose from. The most sought after day passes are typically for resorts in popular settings – notably, Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas – and of course the rates reflect this demand. Day passes at resorts outside the well-traveled areas of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, meanwhile, often offer shockingly affordable rates for their picturesque pleasures.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of our favorite Cabo day pass options in 2022.

Corazón actually offers several day pass options through resortpass.com, including a $100 beach pass that includes a reserved lounge chair and umbrella, and $40 credit on food and beverage.

VIP packages include the $200 “Heart of Cabo”, which boasts a beachfront cabana and 30-minute massage, plus assorted F&B credits at resort-based restaurants (including the beachfront Aleta) and watering holes.

Pelicanos 225, El Médano Ejidal, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 980-0604, Corazon Cabo. Day pass price: From $100 USD for adults. Purchase here Corazon Day Pass.

Day pass price: $40 USD for 4 hours; $70 for 7 hours.

The $75 dollar day pass offers access to the beach and outdoor swimming pools (there are three), with sun lounges and towels included. Yes, unlimited food and drinks are included as well, but the resort recommends checking in at reception to find out which restaurants or bars are included in the package for that day. The Kids Club is also open to day pass purchasers, and since tickets are half-price for kids ($37.50 for ages 6 to 11, and free for those 5 and under), this is a great family-friendly option.

The current pricing is good through the end of 2022, and spa services and Starbucks are not included, as are select restaurants. However, even non-participating restaurants are available for unlimited buffet dining at an additional $20 per person charge, which is still a bargain.

Paseo Malecón San José 9, Zona Hotelera, San José del Cabo, (624) 142-9292, Barcelo Gran Faro Los Cabos. Day pass price: $75 USD

Day pass price: $40 USD.

Day pass price: $30 USD.

Los Cabos is very much a dog-friendly destination, with a wonderful array of dog-welcoming resorts, residences, restaurants, and yes, beaches. However, for dog-owning vacationers or newly arrived dog-owning residents, there are a few things that are important to know. Beyond flying with pets (which has its own protocols, detailed here), most local resorts that welcome dogs don’t do so indiscriminately. What that means is Los Cabos resorts typically welcome only small and medium sized dogs up to about 40 pounds. When it comes to the best dog-friendly beaches in Los Cabos, meanwhile, the main thing dog owners need to be aware of is Blue Flag beaches.

As we recently profiled at CaboViVO, Los Cabos has more Blue Flag beaches than any destination in México (25). These beaches are excellent in terms of services and sustainability, but they’re not at all friendly to dogs (meaning, pets aren’t allowed). So knowing these beaches (provided in the article linked here) provides a handy list of “where not to go” for a dog walk/day at the beach. If you look online for reviews of local dog walking beaches to avoid, you’ll see the same three names repeated: Playa Palmilla, Playa Chileno, and Playa Santa María. This is to not a surprise, as those were the first Blue Flag beaches in the area. As recently as five years ago, there were only those three. Now, obviously, there are far more.

Finding the Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in Los Cabos

Luckily for dogs and their owners/”parents”, Los Cabos has way more than 25 beaches – the municipality that’s home to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo boasts more than 100 miles of coastline, with innumerable playas – and outside those that are Blue Flag certified, virtually every other stretch of sand is in fact dog-friendly. Many beaches are secluded or lightly frequented. Which is to say, without rules or regulations of any kind, and thus perfect for letting Max or Daisy off the leash.

Photo credit: Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas. To find out more about the luxury resort’s dog-friendly programs, click here.

As valuable as these less crowded or off-the-beaten-path beaches are – Los Cabos’ East Cape is especially rich in this regard – dogs and their owners shouldn’t feel as if they’re not welcome at many of the best-known beaches. That’s simply not the case. As a matter of fact, the most popular playas in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are dog-friendly (Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas has some off-limits areas to be aware of, however). These social centers feature restaurants and/or bars where dogs and their owners can eat and drink, as well as plenty of space for walking, and abundant opportunities to meet new four-legged friends. Of course, the more popular a beach is, generally speaking, the more likely leashing will be expected or explicitly required.

So with this in mind, here are our suggestions for the “best dog-friendly beaches in Los Cabos.”

Playa del Amor – Cabo San Lucas

The most iconic beach in Los Cabos, Playa del Amor – or, in English, Lover’s Beach – is situated on the half-mile Land’s End headline, and along with neighboring Playa del Divorcio (Divorce Beach), is the closest beach to El Arco and what truly is Land’s End. Beloved by wedding photographers for much more than simply its name, Lover’s Beach offers gorgeous vistas and coastline views, particularly in the morning. There is actually great snorkeling nearby, too. It should be pointed out, however, that one should never swim off neighboring Divorce Beach due to strong Pacific rip currents. For dogs, both Lover’s and Divorce Beaches are wonderful playgrounds. Lover’s Beach is accessible only by boat, meaning the small pangas (or water taxis) that throng the marina area. Water taxi drivers typically charge by the person, and thus may want to negotiate to take a dog or dogs. But getting there shouldn’t be a problem. The real issue is getting dogs in and out of the boat. If your dog is too big to lift or carry, you may want to skip Lover’s Beach for this reason. It’s also important to bring water for yourself and your pooch, as there are rarely any vendors here. Bring what you need and be prepared to clean up after yourself. A little more effort is required here, in other words. Which is why, in terms of convenience, Lover’s Beach may not be among the best dog-friendly beaches in Los Cabos. But there’s no question it’s the most memorably spectacular.

Playa Los Cerritos – El Pescadero

Cerritos may be the best Los Cabos dog beach, in that it has everything. Long a destination spot for surfers due to its great year-round conditions, Cerritos is also perfect for dog walking, frisbee catching, tennis ball retrieval, runs along the shoreline as Pacific Ocean waves roll in … Basically, whatever you and your best friend feel like doing. The beach is very long, so there’s plenty of room to play. A few more popular areas will require a leash, however, and a leash is also required to take advantage of day pass opportunities at Cerritos Surf Town Beach Hotel & Spa. Day passes are $40, which includes a $20 food and drink credit. Attractions like the swimming pool, hot tub, and surfboard rentals make this a great family hangout, and yes, dogs are welcome as long as they’re leashed. The hotel is right on the beach, so any time Buddy’s ready for a run, you’re conveniently close. The only real downside is the location, as Cerritos is a 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas, north along Hwy 19 (turn off is at Km 67).

Playa El Médano – Cabo San Lucas

Okay, so this one is complicated. But it’s important to include, because Médano Beach is not only the most popular beach in Los Cabos, it’s the center of social life in Cabo San Lucas. This is where locals go to hang out, and where tourists not only go to party and work on their tans, but also negotiate many outdoor activities. So, why is it complicated? Well, Playa El Médano (or Médano Beach, either version works) is home to no less than 12 Blue Flag beaches. How is it possible that nearly half the region’s 25 Blue Flag certified beaches are contained within one larger beach? Well. Médano Beach is really big – about two miles long – and all those Blue Flag certifications belong to sandy stretches in front of individual resorts (Breathless, Casa Dorada, Cascadas de Baja, ME Cabo, Pueblo Bonito Blanco and Rosé, RIU Palace, RIU Santa Fe, RIU Palace Baja California, Villa del Palmar, Villa El Arco, and Villa La Estancia). So pets are not welcome in front of those resorts, each of which has beach style lounge seating set up for guests. But that still leaves a lot of beach left to enjoy with your pooch, whether that means walking, playing fetch, or chilling. The most popular cantina on the beach is the famed Mango Deck, and yes, it’s dog-friendly. Leashing is pretty much recommended everywhere on Playa El Médano because of the crowds, but for those seeking more freedom, the beach traffic does thin out to the east past the big resorts. Don’t be scared away because of the fact that a few spots are off-limits. Dogs are definitely welcome on much of the beach, and in many of the bars and restaurants. Médano Beach begins at the eastern end of the Marina (in front of Breathless) and follows the coastline.

Playa Costa Azul – San José del Cabo

Playas Costa Azul and Los Cerritos actually have a lot in common. Both are renowned surf beaches. Costa Azul, for example, is home to the Zippers surfbreak that once was the site of Los Cabos’ only WSL (World Surf League) sponsored surfing event. Beyond that, both beaches are quite large and consistently popular, but with one end that’s much less used, and thus perfect for unleashed dog-friendly fun. The more crowded part of Costa Azul is the section centered around Zipper’s – the restaurant, not the surfbreak. Zipper’s is one of the best beach hangouts in the area, with good food and drinks, and a pet-friendly attitude. Dogs should be leashed in the restaurant, of course, as well as on the more populated portion of the beach. The main difference between Los Cerritos and Costa Azul is that the latter is located in San José del Cabo, and thus is much more convenient for those who live or are staying anywhere in Los Cabos except Cabo San Lucas. If you’re driving from Cabo San Lucas, Playa Costa Azul is on the right as you drive into San José del Cabo, at Km 28.5.

There are plenty of other great local beaches that welcome dogs, but these are the four we’d rank as the closest pairing in terms of best dog-friendly beaches in Los Cabos and best beaches period. These are also beaches that, by and large, are equally enjoyable for both dogs and their pets.

Beaches and Los Cabos are practically synonymous, so much so that first-time visitors may not know where to begin when it comes to sunny days spent on glorious stretches of golden sand.

What are the best beaches in Los Cabos? What is it that makes a great beach, anyway? Is it the views? The color and consistency of the sand? The availability of bars or restaurants? The conditions for activities like surfing, snorkeling and swimming?

Beautiful beaches are a Los Cabos specialty. Photo credit: Visit Los Cabos.

All are interesting questions that go to the heart of any visit to Los Cabos, given that the region boasts over 100 miles of coastline, with more picturesque playas that the average tourist could see in a year.

As it happens, there is one objective measurement for beaches, in Los Cabos and elsewhere. That’s the Blue Flag program pioneered in the 1980s by the European based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which judges beaches based on very defined standards of cleanliness, services and sustainability.

Playa El Médano stretches for over two miles in Cabo San Lucas, with many of its resort areas blue flag certified. Photo credit: Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa.

Blue Flags are not about beauty. They’re about sustainability and services, from signs, clean bathrooms, showers, handicap access, and recycling bins to parking, and other practical concerns that can significantly enhance one’s experience at the beach.

But since every beach in Los Cabos is visually breathtaking, offering stunning Sea of Cortés or Pacific Ocean views, the availability of these basic services is a big deal when it comes to choosing where you want to spend your day in paradise … particularly if you’re traveling with children or people with disabilities.

Playa Santa María was one of the first three beaches to be awarded a blue flag in Los Cabos. Photo credit: Visit Los Cabos.

The good news is that there are a lot of blue flags flying in cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, as well as along the 20-mile tourist corridor which connects them. As a matter of fact, Los Cabos has more blue flag beaches – 25 – than any other destination in México.

For some context, the blue flag program is globally recognized, with beaches or marinas maintaining the stringent blue flag standards (it’s not a lifetime award) in nearly 60 different countries around the world. México is currently in 10th place worldwide in terms of countries with the most blue flag beaches – and first in the Americas – claiming 64, along with two blue flag marinas, and 31 blue flag tour boats. Baja California Sur, the state where Los Cabos is located, leads the way with 25 (all in Los Cabos). The only other state that is close is Quintana Roo, the state where Cancún and the Riviera Maya is located, with 22.

Beach activities in Los Cabos include swimming, snorkeling, stand up paddleboarding, and much more. Photo credit: Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa.

Los Cabos’ blue flag supremacy is a rather new phenomenon. As recently as 2016, the municipality had only three beaches that had earned FEE’s blue flag stamp of approval: Playas Chileno, Santa Maria and Palmilla. The stunning growth of the program since then is a credit to the community at large, which has recognized how important beaches are to the tourism industry and has made a commitment to keep the local sands both beautiful and sustainable.

Many of the newer blue flag beaches in Los Cabos are in fact subsections of Playa El Médano, the two-mile stretch of gorgeous sand that is the center of social life in Cabo San Lucas. But blue flag beaches can be found in virtually every corner of Los Cabos, from popular city based locales to lesser known gems like El Surgidero and La Ribera, two East Cape playas conveniently close to where a new Four Seasons resort has recently opened.

Sun and shade are both found in abundance on Playa El Médano. Photo credit: Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa.

The two most recent beach additions for 2022-2023 are each associated with area resorts. Grand Velas Los Cabos, a luxury all-inclusive set on Playa El Tule in the tourist corridor, had its beach blue flag certified for the upcoming year. So too did Paradisus Los Cabos, the Melia brand luxury resort that like Grand Velas, is situated in the 20-mile tourist corridor between the cape cities.

For reference purposes, here’s the complete list of 25 blue flag beaches in Los Cabos as of the 2022-2023 season:
