August – December: Five of the world’s seven endangered sea turtle species come to Baja California to lay their eggs–the green turtle, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive riddle and leatherback (the largest sea turtle and the world’s fastest aquatic reptile)–with local conservation agencies and some area resorts offering opportunities to assist in the hatchling process. Although mature sea turtles are long-lived and have few predators, they are in great danger during their initial journey away from the nest, extremely vulnerable to predators on both land and sea. In Los Cabos, sea turtle season stretches from late August until early December.

August – May: The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 40 feet in length, and weighing as much as 47,000 pounds. There is no risk in swimming with these gentle giants, however, since they subsist solely on plankton. Baja California Sur’s capital city of La Paz is the premier place to indulge in this interactive and unforgettable wildlife adventure, with the majority of swim tours occurring near the tip of the El Mogote peninsula. Complimentary round-trip transportation from Los Cabos is provided by several respected activities providers. To find out more, email us at info@cabovivo.com.

November to March: Each winter, from mid-November through mid-March, strong El Norte winds blow hundreds of miles down the Sea of Cortés, creating ideal wind and kite surfing conditions in many coastal areas of Baja California Sur. During this yearly breezy season, small East Cape communities like Los Barriles and La Ventana become meccas for world-class kitesurfers, kiteboarders and windsurfers, who flock to regional beaches for a chance to grab big air over offshore waves.

December 12th: The feast day for the Virgin of Guadalupe is a major religious holiday in México. The holiday honors the day in 1531, when a young man named Juan Diego was visited by an apparition of the Virgin Mary. She asked him to build a church in her honor on Cerro del Tepeyac, a hill in the northernmost part of what is now Mexico City. The church was built, and some 20 million people annually now visit the Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe. In Cabo San Lucas, parades are often held on this day. There is also a beautiful shrine at the Tropic of Cancer Monument near Santiago, and each year on the Day of the Virgin it’s a stop on a pilgrimmage that finishes in nearby Miraflores.

December 15th: Each winter some 5,000 to 10,000 blue, gray, humpback and other whales migrate from their arctic feeding grounds to breed in the shallow water coves and inlets of beautiful Baja California Sur. In this regard these leviathans of the deep are very much like the snowbirds who flock to cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to escape frigid winter temperatures in the U.S. and Canada. The only real difference–aside from the obvious anatomical ones–is one of scale. The longest mammalian migration ever recorded was in 2014, when a gray whale dubbed Varvara traveled over 14,000 miles round-trip from Russia to Cabo San Lucas. Humpbacks, however, are the most commonly seen whale in Los Cabos waters. The season officially starts on December 15th and extends through mid-April, with a variety of tour options available.

December 16 – 24th: Las Posadas last for nine days, and commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Each night brings candlelight processions and reenactments, which culminate in house parties after admittance has been granted at the “inn.” The most important day of the season in Mexico is not Christmas, but Christmas Eve (Nochebuena). This is the last night of the posadas, and the birth of Christ is celebrated at midnight. Traditionally, families then attend a midnight mass, followed by dinner and presents. Posada is also the name given to company holiday parties in México, many of which occur during this same period.

Event Details
December 28th: Holy Innocents Day, also known as Childermas, is on December 28, and is a remembrance of King Herod’s decree that all male infants in Bethlehem should be killed in order to eliminate the threat to his throne posed by the baby Jesus, whose birth he had learned of from the three wise men. The day is also celebrated as a Mexican version of April Fool’s Day, with jokes, pranks, tall tales, and elaborate hoaxes. One should greet all statements made on this day with a healthy amount of skepticism, and under no circumstances should money be lent, as tradition holds that any debts incurred on this day do not have to be honored.

Event Details
December 31: New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the year in Los Cabos, and the midnight fireworks show over Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas is the most spectacular of all the fireworks displays presented locally each year. As a consequence, the most sought after parties tend to be those with the best views of the fireworks. Casa Dorada’s annual theme parties are a popular attraction – this year there’s a “masquerade” theme – and Corazón Cabo’s rooftop bar, Rooftop 360, is hosting an adults-only Black Party to go with its unmatched fireworks vantage. Hilton Los Cabos in the Tourist Corridor, meanwhile, will showcase a Gatsby themed dinner party, with private Champagne stocked cliffside cabanas available for $1,000 U.S.
