Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Season

November – March: Each winter, from mid-November through mid-March, strong El Norte winds blow hundreds of miles down the Sea of Cortés, creating ideal wind and kite surfing conditions in many coastal areas of Baja California Sur. During this yearly breezy season, small East Cape communities like Los Barriles and La Ventana become meccas for world-class kitesurfers, kiteboarders and windsurfers, who flock to regional beaches for a chance to grab big air over offshore waves. For years, the Lord of the Wind Showdown in Los Barriles was one of the highlights of the Los Cabos sporting calendar. Nowadays, however, the La Ventana Classic is the biggest draw, offering prize money and glory to the top finishers in the kiteboarding and windsurfing races each January, as well as the winners of stand up paddle boarding and mountain biking competitions.
