Luxury Seaside Development Commands a Premier Location
Cabo Del Sol, a landmark resort and residential community made famous by its Jack Nicklaus-designed Ocean Course that opened in 1994, has entered a new chapter in its evolution.
For more than a generation, Cabo Del Sol has been credited with elevating Los Cabos from a ‘sleepy little fishing village’ to a premier lifestyle destination. The new Four Seasons expansion within the 1,800-acre master-planned community signals a well-timed entry into the ultra-luxury market on a site often described as “the first, the best and the last location in Cabo.”
Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s leading luxury hospitality brands, has planted its flag on a lovely stretch of coastline fronting the Sea of Cortés. Cabo Del Sol occupies a prime location roughly in the center of the “Tourist Corridor” that connects the cities of Cabo San Lucas, a deep-sea fishing and nightlife capital; and San José del Cabo, a charming colonial town.
Built on 50 beachfront acres in groups of two-story casitas and villas, Four Seasons Resort and Residences, Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol sits within the Cove Club, a new private golf and beach club and resort community. Cove Club membership includes an exclusive beach club with beach dining, four pools, world-class golf, a mountain adventure park, an organic farm and a racquet sports park.
Scheduled to open in mid-2023, the Four Seasons Resort will feature 74 guest rooms and casitas, 17 suites and five villas. An estimated $1.5 million is being spent to build and furnish each guest room. In addition to family and adult pools, multiple dining options, a signature Four Seasons spa, a cutting edge fitness facility and a Kid’s Club, an open-air mercado (market) will showcase the finest local vendors and serve as the central gathering place for the community. Guests and residents will have access to all ocean and mountain Baja experiences.
In addition, 61 Four Seasons Private Residences, clustered in a seaside village, will offer ocean views from spacious, covered terraces overlooking the Sea of Cortes. The limited collection of villas and residences includes two- to five-bedroom layouts up to 5,600 square feet, all with private pools. Prices start at $4.8 million. Owners may enter their residences into the Four Seasons Private Retreats rental program, and they can purchase a Cove Club membership.
The Cove Club course, formerly known as the Ocean Course, is now private for members and their guests. Jack Nicklaus, the original designer of the Ocean Course, has overseen the current changes to the routing. Under his watchful eye, Phase I of the course enhancements has included the creation of several new holes, upgraded playing surfaces and refurbished bunkers.
The scintillating layout, described by Nicklaus as occupying “the best piece of golf property I’ve ever seen,” stretches for more than a mile across a stunning desert landscape backdropped by tall rugged mountains. Often described as the ‘Pebble Beach of the Baja,’ the Cove Club course touches a coastline marked by granite outcrops and golden beaches washed by the Sea of Cortes. This exceptional venue, one of the top-rated courses on Nicklaus’ extensive resume, has been a fixture on most “Top 100 in the World” lists since its debut.
Course highlights include the sixth, the first of four superlative par 3’s at the Cove Club. This splendid hole plays from a granite shelf to a peninsular green collared by a surging tidal pool. A gaping bunker to the left of the green prevents hooked tee shots from tumbling into the sea. A rock-encased bunker at the back right section of the putting surface serves the same purpose. The prevailing breeze, usually in a player’s face, can complicate club selection.
The 18th hole (formerly the 16th) is a rousing downhill par 4 aimed to the sea that plunges 100 feet down the side of a mountain. “We moved the green a little closer to the ocean and dropped it down to create a spectacular finishing hole,” Nicklaus said. The infinity-edge green, flanked by bunkers, clings to a cliff and appears to float on the ocean.
Players can walk down a set of stone steps after putting out on No. 18 to a Chiringuita, technically a “beach shack” but actually one of the largest and best-appointed beach clubs in Los Cabos. Golfers can kick off their shoes, get their toes in the sand and enjoy post-round fare and refreshments a few yards from the sea.
According to Peter Carlton, president of Oakmont Corporation, owner of Cabo Del Sol, “The vision is about much more than just checking all the boxes by adding endless amenities with ocean views and putting in a hotel with branded residences. We are combining an exclusive golf experience and a beach club community along with a world-class resort in a way that just has not been done before in a single location like this. And we’re bringing it to our members and guests with the same style of hospitality that originally brought people to Cabo in the first place.”
