Las Posadas

Event Details

December 16 – 24th:  Posada, which means “inn” in Spanish, is a word you hear often in Los Cabos during the month of December, since it’s what company Christmas parties are called. But the plural, Posadas, has a much greater meaning. Las Posadas take place over nine days, from December 16th to the 24th, and remember the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. As part of this remembrance, candlelit processions and reenactments are held each night, culminating in house parties after entry has been granted at the “inn.” The biggest day of the holiday season in México is not Christmas, but Christmas Eve (Nochebuena). This is the final night of the posadas, and the birth of Christ is celebrated as the clock strikes twelve. Traditionally, families go to a midnight mass, then have dinner and open presents afterwards. Christmas Day itself is generally given over to recalentado (leftovers). For tourists, Christmas dinners are offered at most major area restaurants.
